Job Description/Responsibility

Introduction
Our client, a financial services provider, is seeking a Head Product Controller to manage and build out of appropriate policies, processes, and operational controls as well as the ongoing management thereof and stakeholder engagement for GM Product Control.
Description
  • Actively discuss business issues with Business / Desk Heads to promote /ensure compliance to policy and procedures
  • Drive policy and relevant KPI across the various control functions in support of Balance Sheet substantiation and P&L validation
  • Keep abreast of local market developments which could have a direct bearing on changing procedures / reporting requirements
  • Interact with other infrastructure areas, specifically Operations and Financial Control, for issue resolutions
  • Manage a team of Product Controllers (analysts) to ensure a high level of FO client service
  • A hands-on approach coupled with proactive leadership skills and the ability to delegate effectively
  • Manage the daily Balance Sheet and income statement reconciliations to the general ledger
  • Thoroughness, rigor and attention to detail regarding products, processes and controls
  • Manage stakeholder ad-hoc requirements
  • Assist in the reduction of operational risk in the GM Front and Back-Office
  • Partner with Risk to analyse, evaluate and prioritise the critical risk areas in the environment and implement appropriate controls and solutions to address gaps and to mitigate against risk exposure
  • Challenge existing processes and controls ensuring best practice across finance
  • Determine the people management strategy for the area with a focus on talent management, development, resourcing and retention
  • Embed formal Performance Development in line with the company policy and informal coaching in the team
  • Review training needs of team members (both technical and soft skill requirements)
  • Establish and maintain a succession plan for the key roles in the team
  • Interview and recruit direct reports
  • Manage adequate handovers to new recruits, ensuring a degree of continuity
  • Review workforce and recruitment plans for the team and reallocate resources where required.
  • Approve leave requests for direct reports and manage the leave planning for the team effectively
  • Act as escalation point for all grievances raised in the team
  • Review overall team performance and provide input into Talent Review Forums and GM Finance management

Profile
  • CA (SA)
  • Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) (advantageous), Financial Risk Management (FRM) (advantageous)

In depth understanding and application of:

  • Financial markets products (FI, FX, Commodities, Credit and Equities)
  • Market risks and the interaction with Balance Sheet valuation and profitability
  • Key controls relating to Balance Sheet substantiation and Valuation governance
  • More than 8 years' post article experience in investment banking finance, 4 of which must be in a similar senior finance role
  • Business experience in a banking environment gained from a finance, product management or front / middle office role
