Job Description/Responsibility

  • There is a temporary position available at the Department of Psychology as PhD Candidate in work and organizational psychology for a period of four years with teaching duties. This is an educational position that shall provide promising research recruits the opportunity for professional development through studies towards a PhD. The position is connected to the PhD program at the Faculty of Social and Educational Sciences, and the faculty will be your employer. Place of work will be at the Department of Psychology. 25 % of the position includes required duties consisting of teaching, supervision and grading after agreement with the Department.
  • The Department of Psychology currently has approximately 110 employees and 1100 students. The Department holds a large and diverse research community covering a variety of disciplines within psychology, and offers studies at the bachelor-, master- (specializations in learning – brain, behavior, environment and in work- and organizational psychology) and PhD level in addition to a study programme in clinical psychology. In addition, the Department participates in extensive local, national and international research collaborations. Our research ambition is to be internationally and nationally leading in various disciplines of psychology.
  • The position as PhD candidate is connected to the «Occupational Health Psychology and Health promotion Research Group» at the Department of Psychology. The research group’s perspective on organizational change and interventions is that more attention should be directed on how to develop and increase positive psychosocial experiences, while simultaneously indirectly reduce the negative. By introducing positive change initiatives, the aim is to reduce stress and to improve the mental and physical health of employees. The overall objective of this project is to create conditions for health promoting workplaces, by providing research-based knowledge about how the work environment affects well-being and health, as well as to evaluate interventions aimed to develop organizations and to promote positive occupational health. More specifically, the present project aim to provide research based knowledge and best practice on how to design and implement organizational health interventions within knowledge intensive workplaces. In this project, one main data source is the ARK database. The ARK (Arbeidsmiljø- og Klimaundersøkelser) project is a Work Environment and Climate Study especially adapted for knowledge intensive workplaces, using the KIWEST questionnaire (Knowledge Intensive Working Environment Survey Target). ARK is an intervention framework where the aim is to improve the psychosocial work environment and employee well-being. The ARK intervention project is used by 18 universities and university colleges in Norway, and has a database including over 15000 respondents. Building on the Job-Demand-Resources model, ARK focuses on developing employee resources through participatory processes where the employees have a high degree of influence. The aim of the project is to understand more of the mechanisms behind such an intervention process, what are the success factors for developing and implementing good interventions, as well as follow up and have good methods for evalutions. This will finally improve the strategy for how to succeed with conducting interventions in both NTNU and elsewhere. A methodological tool based on mixed methods will therefore be the intended final outcome of this project.

Education Requirements

  • Employment will be activated in accordance with existing regulations of 31.01.06. The requirement for the position is a completed master’s degree in Work and organizational psychology or education to equivalent type and level. The master’s thesis must be submitted prior to the application deadline, and the final oral examination must be passed in order to be employed in the position. To be admitted to the PhD programme, applicants must have a strong academic record from their previous studies, and must have a weighted average grade for the last two years of their master's or equivalent education (equivalent to 120 credits) of B or higher in terms of NTNU's grading scale. Applicants with no letter grades from previous studies must have an equally good academic foundation. Applicants who are unable to meet these criteria may be admitted only if they can document that they are particularly suitable candidates for education leading to a PhD degree.
  • Personal qualities like being independent, solution focused, positive, social, cooperative, creative and have motivation for contributing to a positive work environment will be emphasized. Good knowledge regarding both qualitative and quantitative metohods would be an advantage. It would also be an advantage if the applicant has experience with research and has publications in adition to their Master thesis, and show that they can take an independent initiative to publishing. It will also be an advantage if the applicant can teach in Norwegian.
