Job Description/Responsibility

  • Due to the severe consequences that can occur in case of longitudinal running ductile fracture (RDF), pipelines must be designed to arrest a propagating crack. In the early 1970s, researchers at the Battelle Memorial Institute developed a semi-empirical two-curve method (TCM) to predict arrest in RDF problems. The TCM was calibrated to a set of full-scale burst tests performed on pipe segments of low-toughness steel. With modern high-toughness steel pipes, the TCM approach has proven to be non-conservative and correction factors have been introduced. The use of TCM with correction factors has been successful for pipelines of moderate strength transporting lean natural gas, but not for high-strength pipelines or pipelines transporting CO2. However, the design methods applied in today's standards and recommended practices are still based on the TCM. This is because the RDF problem is complex and involves nonlinearities in form of plasticity and fracture in the pipeline, contact interaction between the pipeline and the surrounding soil or water, decompression in the pressurized fluid, and fluid-structure interaction.
  • Over the last years SINTEF has developed a numerical tool for predicting arrest in RDF problems with special emphasis on pipelines transporting CO2. Within the Norwegian CCS Research Centre (NCCS), SINTEF aims to further develop and validate the numerical tool, firstly so that it can be applied in design of pipelines, and secondly so that it can support modifications of the TCM or developing a new analytical method for predicting crack arrest. Validation of models based on medium scale burst tests have been performed successfully, but some challenges on the fracture modelling side are still present.
  • The topic of the PhD project is running ductile fracture in pipelines transporting CO2, and the overall objective is to develop a computational fracture model for large scale simulations of crack propagation in pressurized steel pipelines. The PhD project will be an integral part of the research task on CO2 transport in NCCS and the candidate will collaborate with colleagues at NTNU and SINTEF.

  • The successful applicants are motivated and ambitious students with excellent grades and background in materials mechanics, experimental mechanics, non-linear finite element methods, impact mechanics and similar. The PhD applicant is expected to carry out both theoretical, numerical and experimental work. The applicant should be fluent in English (spoken and written), familiar with giving presentations and lectures in English.
  • Conditions

    PhD Candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross NOK 436 900 before tax. There will be a 2 % deduction to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross wage.

    Engagement as a PhD Candidate is done in accordance with “Regulation concerning terms and conditions of employment for the posts of post-doctoral research fellow, research fellow, research assistant and resident”, given by the Ministry of Education and Research of 19.07.2010. The goal of the positions is to obtain a PhD degree. Applicants will engage in an organized PhD training program, and appointment requires approval of the applicant’s plan for a PhD study within three months from the date of commencement.
