  • Job Description
  • SUBPRO is currently looking to hire a new PhD research fellow/Post doctoral fellow for a period of three years, within the following area: Validation of Methods for Optimizing Remaining Useful Life (RUL).
  • This project is a continuation of an ongoing activity in developing methods for optimizing production from an oil field, while simultaneously avoiding unplanned production stops due to equipment degradation. In the ongoing project, we are developing mathematical formulations that incorporate uncertainty in the model and the production parameters by applying a robust (scenario-based) model predictive control approach.
  • The candidate will design and set up a small lab rig on which production optimization and accelerated life testing of critical components in oil production systems can be carried out. The mini-lab rig will be used to verify our methods that were tested in simulations. Part of the work will be to develop the methods further, and also to study how machine-learning techniques can be used to develop data-driven diagnostic and prognostic models for the lab system.
  • This project is a combination of lab work and numerical studies in a programming language such as Matlab or Python. We are looking for candidates who like to see their simulation results realized in a physical system. The activities will involve process modelling and analysis, developing methods from robust and stochastic optimization, and applying them on the laboratory system.

  • The appointment will be made according to Norwegian guidelines for universities and university colleges and to the general regulations regarding university employees. Applicants for the PhD positions must agree to participate in organized doctoral study programs within the period of the appointment and have to be qualified for the PhD study.
  • NTNU’s personnel policy objective is that the staff must reflect the composition of the population to the greatest possible extent.
  • The position is remunerated according to the Norwegian State salary scale. There is a 2% deduction for superannuation contribution

  • General Qualifications
  • We are looking for a candidate with a strong background in Chemical/Process/Energy/Reliability engineering with experience in optimization/control, or a strong background in control engineering with applications in process engineering.
  • The candidate should have a good knowledge in mathematics and numerical optimization, and preferably also approaches for handling uncertainty. Sound experience in a programming language as Matlab, Python, or Julia, etc is required, and experience with laboratory work, statistical methods, and machine learning is of advantage. Industrial experience from the oil and gas or process industry will also be considered an advantage.
  • The successful candidate should be creative, with a strong ability to work problem oriented. He/she should also enjoy interdisciplinary research and take keen interest in learning and working in teams.
  • The regulations for PhD programmes at NTNU state that a Master degree or equivalent with at least 5 years of studies and an average grade of A or B within a scale of A–E for passing grades (A best) for the two last years of the MSc is required, and C or higher of the BSc. Candidates from universities outside Norway are kindly requested to send a Diploma Supplement or a similar document, which describes in detail the study and grade system and the rights for further studies associated with the obtained degree:
