Job Description/Responsibility

  • The University of Surrey is a global university with a world-class research profile and an enterprising spirit. Inventive and forward thinking, its heritage shows a recurring theme of going its own way, doing things differently – and achieving notable results.
  • Guildford School of Acting (GSA) is the conservatoire of the University of Surrey situated within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. As a founding member of the Federation of Drama Schools (FDS), GSA is one of the UK’s leading conservatoires for intensive vocational performance and technical theatre training and innovative performance research. In the National Student Survey 2018, GSA was ranked second in the UK conservatoire sector for overall satisfaction.
  • The BA Dance Programme at the University of Surrey was set up over 30 years ago and was the first academic dance department in the UK. Our unique BA Dance course covers practice and theory, delivering diverse dance practices and critical perspectives of dance in our contemporary globalized culture. The Dance Programme sits within Guildford School of Acting (GSA), which is situated within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. GSA is one of the UK’s leading conservatoires for specialised and intensive vocational training and innovative performance research. Established in 1935, GSA enjoys national and international renown as a leading conservatoire for performer training. GSA has a diverse and vibrant community of creative practitioners, academic researchers and technicians.
  • We are currently looking for a 0.5 FTE Teaching Fellow to join the Department of Dance, Choreography & Movement on a fixed term to contribute to the delivery of our BA Dance programme. As a dynamic teacher and practitioner, you will contribute to the ongoing development of dance theory and practice at Surrey and the engagement of dance with other disciplines across several academic and performance programmes at GSA.
  • Preference will be given for candidates who have excellent experience and connections within the dance industry, previous experience teaching on a dance programme in the HE/vocational sector and leading contemporary dance and/or somatic practices.
  • You will work with appropriate external partners (Professional Training Year) with a view to sustaining and enhancing Surrey’s authority in this field. You will have experience of working with students/learners, and have specialist skills in dance studies. Experience in project management, and/or arts production/programming will also be highly valued. A Masters and/or PhD in dance while valued, is not essential.
  • You will work alongside colleagues in the Department of Dance, Choreography & Movement and more widely in GSA and join a thriving creative community, working with inspiring colleagues and students. You will contribute to academic management within GSA, and provide relevant perspectives on learning & teaching practices, and contemporary fields of performance/production and scholarship.
