Job Description/Responsibility

  • Applications are invited for a Research Associate to work on the H2020 funded “TOPCAPI: Thoroughly Optimised Production Chassis for Advanced Pharmaceutical Ingredients” project based within the Manchester Institute of Biotechnology. This project involves a total of 8 academic and industry partners from 4 different EU countries. The aim of the TOPCAPI project is to exploit the natural fabrication power of actinomycetes as microbial cell factories to produce high-value pharmaceutical ingredients.
  • You will have skills in genetics of Streptomyces coelicolor and synthetic and/or molecular biology allied to strong interests in genome editing and metabolic engineering. The appointee will join a team of researchers in the TOPCAPI consortium, working with another experimental PDRA and a technician based in the Manchester Institute of Biotechnology.
  • The project will be working to exploit actinomycetes to produce high-value pharmaceutical ingredients, in particular, the starter compound for the semi-synthesis of a new topical anti-acne drug currently in Phase II clinical trials, and intermediates for the semi-synthetic production of medically important type II polyketide tetracyclines to be used against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections (MRSA). A strong commitment to team-based work is required with strong background in synthetic biology, molecular biology and actinomycetes genetics. This project will be supervised by Professor Eriko Takano.
  • You will hold a PhD (or equivalent) in (Biology/Biochemistry) (or a related subject area), and have technical skills in synthetic and/or molecular biology, and metabolic engineering allied to strong interests in genome editing.
