Job Description/Responsibility

  • An opportunity has arisen for a well-qualified and highly motivated individual to contribute to an Engineering and Physical Science Research Council (EPSRC) funded collaborative research project focusing on powder manufacturing, in particularly hot isostatic pressing. The project focuses on an integrated approach to multiscale modelling, and the specific post here is to provide experimental data in support of the modelling activity. This post is based at the University of Manchester and supervised by Prof. Michael Preuss, within the School of Materials.
  • Project: Introduction to an integrated (ICME) approach to multiscale modelling of the fabrication and joining of powder processed parts
  • This project is a collaborative research project funded by the Engineering and Physical Science Research Council (EPSRC) between the University of Manchester and Birmingham related to powder manufacturing. The vision of the project is to deliver an integrated approach to multiscale modelling that can be used for guiding powder processing and welding manufacturing research. The project brings together leading research teams from both universities, together with a group of industry partners. While overall the project focuses on multiscale modelling, post-doctoral research support is needed to provide experimental information and understanding that can inform and validate the modelling activity. The project should be of particular interest for candidates who are experimental experts but with an interest in learning more about modelling activities and how experimental and modelling work go together.
  • The key experimental tasks of the candidate will be to employ a wide range of electron microscopy and x-ray tomography techniques to analyse pore closure and microstructure evolution during hot isostatic pressing (HIP) and weld microstructures after joining HIP’ed parts in order to develop new fundamental understanding of processing-microstructure relationships. Particular focus will also be placed on exploring nano-scale coating of powder to improve its handling and provide functionality. • You will undertake key experimental and characterisation work on the project, and will analyse and disseminate these results to academic and industrial project stakeholders, through conference presentations and high-quality journal publications. You are also expected to become a key member of the Materials Performance Centre, making significant contributions to its continued success, and playing an active role in areas such as student supervision and wider development of experimental methods and techniques within the group.
  • You should have a first degree (BSc/Eng or MSc) or equivalent, and a Ph.D. or equivalent (or equivalent experience) in a materials related subject; sound knowledge of metallic materials; experienced user of diffraction techniques and electron microscopy imaging; the ability to handle large data sets and scripting languages like MATLAB and/or Python; excellent communication skills across a range of media; well-developed interpersonal skills to work effectively with a wide range of people, including staff and students at all levels, and as part of a team.
