    The opportunity

    This business-critical role will see you lead and develop a data strategy and governance centre of excellence.  You will lead and coordinate activities which support improved data governance and efficient management of data working in partnership with the Data and analytics team, IT and strategic project teams to ensure alignment of data activities. You will also be responsible for the development and execution of the data strategy and roadmap by working in close collaboration with business stakeholders and technology partners.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Accountable for running the overall data strategy and governance function across the AusPac division under the Chief Data Officer
    • Lead the development, enhancement and implementation of divisional data governance policies and frameworks including standards for key data and strategic business initiatives to enable consistent management reporting and analytic capabilities
    • Co-ordinate and run the Data Governance Council in alignment with the Group Data Governance Council comprised of business, functional and transformation leaders to deploy consistent standards and stewardship processes, mitigate operational risks and enforce the remediation of identified data quality issues
    • Advocate and implement an effective data risk and compliance culture by effectively designing and implementing data risk management framework, procedures with appropriate control evidence Continue and improve the design of data stewardship and governance processes in alignment with QBE’s data strategy and roadmap; prioritize key areas of focus based on business needs
    • Enhance the Data Governance and Management strategy and support function to internal and external stakeholders
    • Lead and participate in division-wide strategic planning and coordinate planning for the data governance and management practice
    • Manage change control for data stewardship processes, data standards, and quality oversight
    • Collaborate and partner with Business Transformation, Analytics and Technology to integrate data stewardship capability in business process design and technology deployment
    • Builds and maintains strong and effective relationships with all internal and external stakeholders to ensure delivery of models and the data meets (or exceeds) stakeholder expectations
    • Determine and translate how data influences business decisions by partnering with business, analytics, finance and actuarial leaders to identify critical data elements
    • Manage change control for data stewardship processes, data standards, and quality oversight
    • Working with business and key stakeholders assist in building a data-led organisation and support QBE wide transformation programs
    • Create and manage metadata and lineage documentation, monitoring and ongoing improvements; provide a central repository of data and metrics definitions for the organisation
    • Create and manage master data (including reference data) processes and quality processes for the master sets, and monitoring and ongoing improvements
    •  Manage budgeted resources by anticipating expenditures, accurately forecasting resource needs/costs and properly accounting for expenses to meet requirements and achieve fiscal responsibility

  • What are we looking for?

    • Demonstrated experience in running an advanced data governance function within a large organisation within Australia
    • Demonstrated experience in managing data risks and implementing governance processes that manage data risk and drives data-driven outcomes for the organisation
    • Excellent knowledge of master data management, data quality management processes and experience in implementing tools and processes to drive business outcomes
    • Advanced ability to implement pragmatic, impactful data standards and quality programs with effective business adoption
    • Practical experience working with the data science team to apply data governance principles to manage the handling of data and assist in building solutions
    • Broad knowledge of insurance industry operations
    • Substantial shared services technical knowledge and skills across all regions served
    • Advanced knowledge in business performance reporting, finance, HR, marketing, procurement and statistical analytics
    • Knowledge of Project Management methodology
    • Knowledge of organisational change structures and change management approaches
    • Understand the principles underlying the relationship among facts and apply this understanding when solving problems
    • Exceptional ability to partner with senior business leaders to serve as a subject matter expert and liaison for successful collaboration
    • Adept at handling multi-functional, multi-location teams
    • Strong people management and client relationship management skills

    Experience Required: 

    • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience
    • Master’s Degree or Advanced degree in Information Management, Data Governance, Computer Science, Math or Statistics or another related field is preferred
    • Experience in Data management, warehousing and leadership roles with insurance, financial or consulting services firms; successful track record of implementing pragmatic impactful data strategy, standards, and quality programs with effective business adoption and analytic focus
    • Solid working experience in defining and implementing data quality, metadata and master data
    • Sound experience of shared services or BPO or financial services including a strong mix of leadership, change management, analytics, and outsourcing technical experience
    • Significant experience in managing large teams and complex/diverse accounts
