As a member of the BRAC Communications team, you will sharpen your storytelling skills, build your empathy muscles, and be a thought-partner to the communication team in Cox’s Bazar and Head Office. Your contributions will strengthen BRAC’s reputation and trust among external stakeholders and enhance the sense of belonging and pride among our staff. Your work will increase external visibility of BRAC’s programmes and positively influence mindset to realise BRAC’s vision. As the Deputy Manager, Communications, you will establish good rapport with regional and national media (television, radio, newspaper and online), spend regular time in the field immersing yourself in our programmes, and act as a pipeline for transformative human stories coming in from the field.

Deputy Manager, Media and Communications

Job Description/Responsibilities:

  • Pay frequent “reporting trips” to HCMP project areas in Cox’s Bazar to discover new stories, collect interviews, photo, etc.
  • Organize and liaise regular journalists’ visits to the project areas in Cox’s Bazar
  • Create an event, media engagement and content calendar for HCMP in Cox’s Bazar
  • Evaluate and respond to media requests for information; develop press kit and FAQ sheet; orient journalists and photographers on best practices in humanitarian communication
  • Develop a channel for collecting and smoothly disseminating information, news, stories, photographs, videos and materials from the field; manage media distribution lists/ key media contacts
  • Develop a network among local and national media and project staff in Cox’s Bazar
  • Build communications capacity of project staff through appropriate training on photography, news collecting, news writing, and principles of communications (including informed consent, and dos and don’ts of engaging with the media)
  • Provide ideas and content for articles, stories, press releases, blogs, social media posts; take photo and video of field level activities
  • Proactively suggest media and communications engagement opportunities at local and national levels to project HCMP messages into public debate (e.g. roundtables, media enclaves, political talk shows etc.)
  • Monitor coverage of Rohingya crisis by collecting and analyzing data/narratives/images from various sources, including media, academia, human rights groups, aid agencies, research by other BRAC departments, etc; compile weekly media reports relevant to BRAC’s HCMP activities and strategic objectives
  Requirements  

Educational Requirements:

  • Graduation in Journalism, Mass Communication, Media Studies, Development Studies, Social Sciences or English. Degree or diploma on Photography / Videography, News writing / reporting or Disaster Management will get preference.

Experience Requirements:

  • At least 3-5 years as a reporter in reputed media outlets (print/online/TV)
  • Experience of working as a desk/output editor would be an added advantage

Additional Job Requirements:

  • Knowledge of Media landscape in Cox’s Bazar, national media landscape
  • Knowledge on all kinds of newsroom roles, communications, media and public relations
  • Knowledge on current trends in development and humanitarian interventions, climate change and environmental issues
  • Knowledge on basic photography and videography
  • Skilled on writing press releases, partnership proposals, terms of reference and developing media kits
  • Arranging press conferences
  • Strong writing and speaking skills in English and Bangla
  • Impart training for capacity building of communication team members
  • Should be a Team player and Creative in delivery
  • Skilled in listening, understanding, responding and has ability to influence
  • Flexible to spend extended periods in project areas
  • Ability to respond at times of crisis and disaster
